Inspired by vintage FFA jackets and fencing jackets, this garment challenged me to find balance between form and function. I patterned a sloper based on the fit of my favorite vintage jacket and adjusted it to be slightly more cropped with longer arms, dramatising its silhouette. The main point of focus was the asymmetrical front panels. I honed in on the precise angle that was functional yet eye-grabbing. The piece felt harsh and jagged at this point, so I added in an aesthetic, yet functional dart on the back panel that matched the front, along with 4 buttons in the waistband, inspired by navy pants. This was when the piece came together, and I finalized this wearable yet interesting design. The deep black canvas was chosen to highlight the design details. The maximalist button placement represents the feeling of being trapped in notions of individualism and unique expression, and the push and pull of sociological influence. This piece evolved into something special that has changed the way I think about clothing.
