This piece was designed to be something that the wearer could disappear into; I was interested in the paradox of hiding in plain sight and the desire to manufacture and control one's outward identity. I wanted the garment to draw attention away from the wearer and towards the garment. It was inspired by optical illusions and 1990s era long sleeves. To draw eyes to the garment, I designed a pattern that tilted the striped fabric in one direction for the garment and the other for the pocket. The goal was to make something confusing to look at yet hard to look away from. To further allow the wearer to sink into the garment, I added thumbholes to the cuffs, a small but influential detail. These aspects, along with the thin fabric and tightly fitting design, resulted in a long sleeve that represents exactly what it was meant to.
